Do I have to Register my Business in Ontario?

The short answer: Not necessarily

The long answer: You are required to register your business name under the Business Names Act of Ontario if you are using a name other than your own, or if additional words are added to your personal name.

In addition to registering your business name, it may be necessary to register for HST, Payroll or Excise Tax accounts through the Canada Revenue Agency. Some types of businesses also require permits to operate in the province. It's always a good idea to look into municipal by-laws, provincial and federal regulations that effect your specific type of business. Navigating government regulations can be intimidating so consider asking your accountant or bookkeeper for help.
