Dreaming of Starting Your Own Business at Home?

Working from home can have some wonderful perks, but it’s certainly not for everyone. It’s also important to remember that not every business can be operated from your home. There are many things to consider before you get started, in particular, your municipality’s zoning by-law. Once you’ve determined that you can in fact operate from your home, there are other things to consider as well.

1. Does working on your own suit your personality?

This is an important factor when making the decision to run your own home-based business. 99% of home-based businesses do not require additional staff, so you are working on your own most of the time. If you do prefer to work with others, what ways can you achieve that without giving up your home-based business idea?

2. Do you have the self-discipline it requires to motivate yourself even when business is quiet?

When you run your own business, there’s no shortage of things to be done. You also have your regular household duties to keep up with. You’ll need to be able to balance both of these things in order to make working from your home worth it.

3. Will you have trouble setting boundaries between your personal life and your business role?

As a business owner, you will be required to spend a lot of time managing, working, and growing your business. Interruptions are inevitable, unavoidable. This is even more apparent when you are working from your home. You’ll have to be able to find a balance between the two.

4. Do you have enough space?

This is an area that people don’t seem to put a lot of thought into. Depending on the type of business you are running, you may or may not require a lot of space. A small office will not take up a lot of room in your home, but an artist’s studio or manufacturing business will. These are all things that need to be figured out before you start.

Once you’ve made the decision to start your own home-based business, reach out to people who can help with the next steps. Having a solid plan for moving forward is essential when building your business.
