5 Tips to Help Reduce The Stress of Running Your Own Business

When you think about all you need to accomplish in a day, one of two things are going to happen: You are overly optimistic about what you can achieve and become overwhelmed, or you are going to realize that you can’t do it all yourself in the time you have to do it and you adjust your plans. Here are five time-savers that I swear by:

Set a Realistic Schedule

Being late for meetings and appointments is NOT a great way to present a professional business appearance. Constantly rescheduling gives a bad impression too. It’s important for your state of mind and the reputation of your business, that you only take on what you can handle in a day.

Understand How Much Time You Need

Are you a talker? Does your client like to visit after a meeting? Do you often have to commute when meeting with clients? Allow for extra time when you have to meet with clients and for travel. It’s better to have time left over at the end of the day than to be late to pick up your child from baseball practice.

Remember to Make Room for the Unexpected

Emergency situations with clients, a sick child or spouse, and accidents all happen. No matter how hard you try to avoid these things, they will happen. Leave a cushion between meetings and tasks so that if something does occur to throw you off schedule, it will have a minor impact on your overall day.

Take Advantage of Your Down Time

An extra ten or fifteen minutes in a day may not seem like much, but there are plenty of things you can accomplish in that amount of time. Go through your email and respond to any that need your attention. Spend the time filing the stack of papers that have been on your desk for the last two weeks. Return a quick phone call, dust the bookshelf, water the plants. These all the kinds of things that don’t get done when we try to squeeze too much into one day.

Be As Organized As Possible

The more organized you are, the less time you spend looking for important documents, files, and items. This can also help save space when working in a small office, or in your home. This applies to electronic files too.

By implementing these simple time-saving tips, you’ll see what works and doesn’t work for your business. You may not always have enough time in a day, but you can reduce the time you spend on tasks that cause you stress.
